🎇 NYE in Times Square 🎇

New Years Eve in Times Square has always fascinated me. Like many of you, it baffles me that people will stand there for hours waiting for the ball to drop. But, there has to be something to it if that is where everyone looks to ring in the New Year, right? Here is some info about the iconic annual party that I found interesting:

When did the ball drop in Times Square start?

The ball drop has occurred since 1907- every year besides 1942 and 1943 due to lighting restrictions during WWII. It dropped in 2020 into 2021 with no crowd due to the pandemic.

But why a ball?

The Times' chief electrician was tasked with coming up with a spectacle for the crowd that didn't involve ashy firework debris raining down on the crowd.

What about bad weather?

Revelers are not allowed to take umbrellas with them. There is a 55% chance of rain by 6pm and a 95% chance of rain by 9pm in New York City.

Who is performing?

A little American Idol reunion.. Ryan Seacrest is hosting and Carrie Underwood is headlining. Other performers include: Lenny Kravitz, Megan Moroney, Mark Ambor, Michey Guyton, The Jonas Brothers, & more.

And you really can't use the bathroom?

In what is truly a nightmare, there are no bathrooms within the gridded off zone. To enter the zone, there are three spectator checkpoints for counterterrorism screening. Once you enter, you cannot leave and reenter. People begin lining up in the morning for the gates to open at 3pm. Most people do not drink any liquid the entire day in preparation.

What can you bring in?

NOT permitted: backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, any kind of chair, picnic blankets, coolers, alcohol. There are no food and beverage vendors inside Times Square.

Absolutely fascinating stuff, but someone's gotta do it!
