July Recap

School? Back in session? What! With Beech Grove, Decatur Township, Warren Township, Wayne Township, and Perry Township already back and IPS & Washington Township heading back to school tomorrow, the summer as we know it is drawing to an end.

While summer may be fleeting, we aren't ready to say goodbye quite yet. Let's make it a great August!

📍 Community Updates 📍

📍[1] Downtown - The demolition of the Marion County Jail is set to begin in October. The former jail at 40 S Alabama Street should be demolished by next summer and the 2-acre site will be available for potential redevelopment in 2025. Rumors are swirling that this is the hopeful new site for a Major League Soccer stadium.

📍[2] Zionsville - Mayor John Stehr has asked the Zionsville Town Council to delay a vote on the South Village Planned Unit Development as there is not enough consensus among council members about the future of the South Village. There are many vocal citizens who do not want any development in the area. However, 70% of the property in the proposed South Village is owned by private landowners who want to develop. By not setting development standards, the area could become piecemeal and not align with the town's vibe. Sounds like a tricky sitch to navigate for the new mayor!

📍[3] Broad Ripple/Glendale - If you live in a Broad Ripple bungalow and love getting Starbucks but hate dealing with Broad Ripple Ave like me, good news! Starbucks (& Panda Express) is coming to the intersection of Keystone Ave and 62nd Street.

📍[4] Carmel - Texas-based developer Cross Development LLC has walked away from a proposed mixed-use project along Old Meridian Street in Carmel. The project would have included 266 luxury apartments, 10 for-sale condo units, 8,000 square feet of office and commercial space, and 378 square public parking garage. The 75%-25% TIF split and increased interest rates were blamed for making this project not feasible.

🇺🇸 2024 Olympics 🇺🇸

From Biles to Ledecky, the athletes are shining! Here is your Olympics quick guide:

When to watch?

The full Olympics schedule is linked here. This schedule is helpful as it shows which events are medal events.

When does it end?

The last day of competition is August 11th.

Which country wins the Olympics?

This is a question I have often had and the internet is divided. It seems there is no set ‘winner’ of the games as there are different measures of success. The three most common methods to determine a ‘winner’ are:

1. Total Metal Count: country with highest gold, silver, and bronzes combined

2. Gold Medals: The country with the most gold medals

3. Weighted Medal Count: A system where gold medals are weighted more heavily than silver or bronze (e.g., 3 points for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze)

It seems to me that option 3 - the Weighted Medal Count- would be the best option, but can we all agree we need to decide so we can have a clear country winner? Seems like a missed opportunity to me!

How much do Olympians earn for medals?

Besides eternal glory and bragging rights, Olympians from these countries earn:

Japanese table tennis player, Kasumi Ishikawa, was gifted 100 bags of rice after winning Silver in Tokyo. Indonesian badmiton gold medalists Apriyani Rahayu and Greysia Polii were bequethed five cows, a meatball restaurant, and a new house. So who are the real winners?

Not athletes from Great Britain or Norway that's for sure! They get nothing.

🔠 ABC's of indy - ‘T' 🔠

“T” is for … Tre !!

Disclaimer: I did not take the photo above, that is from Yelp. Tre on Main opened on Main Street in Carmel. We went one of the first opening weeks, so they definitely had some kinks to work out, but overall a good experience. The espresso martini was delicious and the patio is great this time of year. It is on the pricier end, but a good destination for special occasions and date nights alike.
